CY Farms, LLC
A sister company of CY Heifer Farms, CY Farms is a diversified 6,000 acre crop farm growing field crops & vegetables. Corn, wheat, soybeans, malting barley and alfalfa are rotated with cabbage, onions, green peas and spinach. The alfalfa rotation for CY Heifer Farm provides a beneficial rotational crop for the intensive vegetable production. CY Farms provides all the forage and straw for CY Heifer Farm. Both farms share resources, employees and work hand-in-hand throughout the year.
Provitello (www.provitellofarms.com) was formed in 2006 as a joint venture of CY Heifer Farm and the Grober Group of Ontario, Canada to produce veal. Grober is a well-established veal producer in Canada and was looking to establish production in the United States after the mad cow event that closed the border. The joint venture allowed for synergies with the heifer operation. Provitello raises milk fed veal calves, a by-product of the area dairy industry, for 20 weeks to about 575 pounds. The 1,000 head facility markets 2,500 calves per year. Jurian Bartelse is the manager and operates the facility with a staff of 2. CY Heifer recently sold its remaining interest to Grober in 2009, however the two operations work very closely together and share labor and equipment resources daily.
A Canadian manufacturer of high quality milk replacer, Grober Nutrition supplies CY Heifer Farm with our milk replacer for calves. With over 40 years of experience, Grober has adapted European standards to North American requirements to meet nutritional needs of young cattle. Jurian Bartelese, Vice President of Grober Nutrition, helps foster the relationship between CY and Provitello.
